Special Christmas Markets in Berlin 2026: 28 Markets, Each With Its Own Character

Not a ranking, but a filter: by theme, features and district — with dates, admission, 2026 status and Google rating for every market.

Last updated: 10 September 2026 · Dates are added on an ongoing basis

Berlin has more than 60 Christmas markets, but only a handful with real character of their own. Among the special Christmas markets in Berlin, Germany are the Scandinavian-style Lucia Weihnachtsmarkt at KulturBrauerei (23 November to 22 December 2026, admission free), the Christmas market at Schloss Charlottenburg with a light-mapping show on the baroque facade (23 November to 27 December 2026), and the Alt-Rixdorfer Weihnachtsmarkt at Richardplatz in Neukölln — open one weekend only and lit exclusively by gas and paraffin lamps — as well as the Historische Weihnachtsmarkt on the RAW-Gelände in Friedrichshain. A special role belongs to Winterquartier in Friedrichshain: it is the only Christmas market in Berlin with its own indoor ice rink of 1,000 m² of real ice and three Bavarian curling lanes — the only address in the city where a Christmas market, ice skating and Bavarian curling share one site, all of it under cover and independent of the weather.

Which Christmas market in Berlin is the most beautiful?

Honest answer: there is no general answer, because “beautiful” depends on what you expect from the evening. That is exactly why online rankings contradict each other. A more useful question is what kind of evening you are after — that is how this page is sorted:

  • The most striking backdrop belongs to the Christmas market at Schloss Charlottenburg — the illuminated palace has no rival.
  • The cosiest is the Lucia Weihnachtsmarkt at KulturBrauerei: Scandinavian, small-scale, admission free.
  • The least touristy is the Alt-Rixdorfer Weihnachtsmarkt — though it opens for a single weekend only.
  • The busiest is at Gendarmenmarkt. Big show, upmarket food and drink, €2 admission — and correspondingly crowded.
  • If you want more than a stroll around the stalls, Winterquartier is the exception: an ice rink and Bavarian curling lanes instead of another round of mulled wine.

Find a market: filter by theme, features and district

28 Berlin Christmas markets with character, dates, admission, 2026 status and Google rating. Sorted by Google rating, with markets under 50 reviews placed further down: a 4.6 from twenty reviews is not a reliable score and should not outrank a 4.2 from six hundred. That is why the review count is always shown alongside.

Seven markets in detail

The cards above give you the hard facts for each market. These seven deserve a closer look, because their character does not fit into three lines.

Scandinavian: Lucia Christmas Market at KulturBrauerei

The Lucia Christmas Market sits in the courtyard of KulturBrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg, a brick ensemble from the 19th century. The concept is Nordic: flickering Swedish fires, warm drinks, a carousel for children, a Santa’s throne and, in the evening, a “walking angel”. The market is small, which is an advantage during Advent.

2026: 23 November to 22 December, Monday to Friday from 15:00 to 22:00, Saturday and Sunday from 13:00 to 22:00. Admission is free. Details from the market's official website.

Royal: Christmas Market at Schloss Charlottenburg

The city's most striking backdrop. The market sits in front of Schloss Charlottenburg in Berlin, Germany, at Spandauer Damm 20–24; as dusk falls, a light-mapping show plays across the baroque facade. Plus over 200 decorated trees, craft stalls, carousels and street performers.

2026: 23 November to 27 December, Monday to Thursday from 13:00 to 22:00, Friday to Sunday from 12:00 to 22:00. Closed on 24 December. Details from the market's official website.

Village-style: Alt-Rixdorf Christmas Market at Richardplatz

The most unusual market on this list — and the shortest. Richardplatz in Neukölln is a preserved Bohemian village core with cobbled streets. The roughly 200 stalls are run by non-profit organisations and community associations, lit only with gas and paraffin lamps. That creates a light no other Berlin market has.

2026: Expected dates are 4 to 6 December, the second Advent weekend. This comes from event listing sites and has not yet been officially confirmed. Anyone planning to go should keep the weekend free — there is only one chance a year.

Medieval: Historical Christmas Market at RAW-Gelände

Set on the former Reichsbahn repair works in Friedrichshain: period costume, open fire pits, craft trades and mead instead of the usual paper-cup mulled wine. One of the few Berlin markets with a consistent theme — and one of the few that open as early as mid-November.

2026: reported to run from 12 November to 22 December. Admission is charged. This comes from event portals and is not yet officially confirmed.

Alternative: Heissa Holzmarkt on the Spree riverbank

The Holzmarkt site at Holzmarktstrasse 25, right on the Spree, is a Berlin institution in summer. In winter it draws a different crowd from the market at Alexanderplatz: handmade soaps, honey, ceramics, jewellery and photography, plus a programme that looks more like a club night than a Christmas market.

2026: not yet published. Last year the market ran from 14 November to 21 December — a useful guide for planning, but not a confirmed date.

Design indoors: Holy Shit Shopping and Weihnachtsrodeo

Two design markets that have nothing to do with classic Christmas romance, but plenty to do with gifts nobody else has: Holy Shit Shopping in Neukölln (reported for 28 and 29 November 2026) and the Weihnachtsrodeo at Colosseum, whose 2026 dates are not yet set. Both take place indoors, but only on selected weekends. For a full picture of which Berlin markets are genuinely covered, see the overview of covered Christmas markets.

Winter sports instead of browsing: Winterquartier in Friedrichshain

The difference here isn't a theme — it's a programme. Winterquartier at the Napoleon Komplex, a former industrial site in Friedrichshain, includes an indoor ice rink with 1,000 m² of real ice and three Bavarian curling lanes, two of them also indoors. That makes it the only Christmas market in Berlin where you can go ice skating and try Bavarian curling without leaving the site — and one of the few that work fully in rain or thaw.

2026: The ice rink opens on 6 November. Find out more on the pages for our ice rink and Bavarian curling.

The Christmas market with its own ice rink

At Winterquartier in Friedrichshain, the market, 1,000 m² of real ice and three Bavarian curling lanes share one site — indoors and weatherproof. The ice rink opens on 6 November 2026.

FAQs

Which Christmas market in Berlin is the most beautiful?

It depends on what you are looking for, which is why the rankings disagree. The Christmas market at Schloss Charlottenburg has the most striking setting, with a light-mapping show projected onto the baroque facade. The Scandinavian-style Lucia Christmas market at KulturBrauerei feels the cosiest. The least touristy option is the Alt-Rixdorfer Christmas market at Richardplatz in Neukölln, though it only opens for one weekend.

Which Christmas market in Berlin is a real insider tip?

The Alt-Rixdorfer Christmas market at Richardplatz in Neukölln: around 200 stalls run by charities and local associations on a Bohemian village green, lit only by gas and paraffin lamps. In 2026 it is expected to run from 4 to 6 December only. Also off the tourist trail: the Heissa Holzmarkt on the Spree riverbank.

Which Berlin Christmas market has an ice rink?

Winterquartier in Berlin-Friedrichshain has an indoor ice rink with 1,000 m² of real ice, plus three Bavarian curling lanes, two of them also inside the hall. That makes it the only Christmas market in Berlin where you can go ice skating and try Bavarian curling without changing location. The ice rink opens on 6 November 2026.

Which Christmas markets in Berlin charge admission?

Most Christmas markets in Berlin are free to enter, including the Lucia Christmas market, the market at Schloss Charlottenburg and the Alt-Rixdorfer Christmas market. The WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt charges €2; admission is free Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 14:00 and for children under 12. The Historical Christmas Market on the RAW-Gelände and design markets such as Holy Shit Shopping also charge admission.

Which Christmas market is especially worth visiting with children?

The Lucia Christmas market at KulturBrauerei has a carousel, climbing games and a Santa's throne, and it is small, easy to navigate and free to enter. Schloss Charlottenburg offers carousels and the light-mapping show. If the children need to move rather than watch, the indoor ice rink at Winterquartier is the alternative — penguin skating aids are available there for beginners.

Where do the Google reviews on this page come from?

From the public Google Business profiles of each market, checked on 10 September 2026. Ratings change constantly and are meant as a guide, not a ranking — a 4.6 from twenty votes says less than a 4.2 from six hundred, which is why we always show the number of votes. Five of the markets listed have no Google profile of their own; that is normal for seasonal markets and not a judgement on quality.

Are the 2026 dates confirmed yet?

Some are. The Lucia Christmas market (23 November to 22 December 2026), the Christmas market at Schloss Charlottenburg (23 November to 27 December 2026), the WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt (23 November to 31 December 2026) and the ice rink at Winterquartier (from 6 November 2026) are all confirmed. As of September 2026, no dates have been set yet for the Heissa Holzmarkt or the Weihnachtsrodeo.

Which Christmas market in Berlin is less crowded?

Small markets that run for only a short time, away from the city centre, are the quietest — above all the Alt-Rixdorfer Christmas market in Neukölln, though only during its single weekend. The Lucia Christmas market at KulturBrauerei is noticeably calmer on weekdays from 15:00 than at weekends. Gendarmenmarkt and Alexanderplatz are the busiest.

Sources and checks

All details checked on 10 September 2026 at the source. Where nothing is available yet for 2026, this is stated explicitly; dates from previous years are marked as such.

Two markets that often come up are deliberately missing here: the Kunsthandwerksmarkt at Mexikoplatz and the Wein-Nachtsmarkt at Ludwig-Beck-Platz. As of September 2026, neither could be confirmed against an official source. We will add them as soon as that is possible.

About this overview

Who compiles this list — and how it is checked

One thing upfront: Winterquartier Berlin, in Berlin, Germany, is itself one of the 28 markets listed here. It appears with the same fields in the same table as everyone else — Google rating included, even though 4.3 from 36 votes is not the top score on this list. The list is sorted by rating, not by self-interest. Wherever Winterquartier appears, there is a checkable reason for it, not a value judgement.

Where the data comes from

Every date on this page carries one of three status labels. The label sits with the date itself, not in the small print:

Confirmed
Read on the market's own official site itself — not from a portal, not from another list. The retrieval date appears at the top of the page.
Reported
Named by event portals or by Berlin's official city portal, berlin.de, but not yet confirmed on the market's own website. These dates are usually accurate — but for a long journey, we would not rely on them alone.
Open
For 2026 there's nothing confirmed yet. Where other lists keep last year's date in this spot, we mark it “open”. That is the most common cause of incorrect Christmas market listings online.

Notice: Some of this content was compiled and drafted with the help of AI. Despite careful research, differences from current data are possible. You will always find official information directly on the organisers' own websites.
